Testing Tip #2: Targeted Academic Nouns

Look for This in Your Classrooms

Write the academic nouns from the objective in the first column for each classroom you visit.  These should be posted in the objective itself.  In the next two columns, tally how often those nouns are used in teacher questions and in student responses.

When you have collected your data, complete the following analyses:

  1. What percentage of teacher questions contained the academic nouns from the objective?

  2. Are the academic nouns from the objective used by students in their responses?

  3. How many classrooms showed a consistent use of academic nouns by teachers and students?  How many classrooms showed random or non-existent use of this skill by both teachers and students?   Did you see any patterns across grade levels?
