Testing Tip#3: Choosing Precise Adjectives

Try This to Boost Student Test Performance

Explain your classroom findings to teachers and why this is such an important element of instruction. Share these three behaviors that will immediately improve the overall academic quality of student responses.

  1. Begin an on-going list of adjectives than can no longer be used in class.  This is a fun way to get students listening for the same old, tired adjectives.  Every time students use a non-academic or non-grade-appropriate adjective, it goes on a list.  But here is where the learning starts.  Now, the teachers asks for a synonym that sounds more like what would be read in a textbook.  So, instead of “nice daughter”, we get charming, delightful or affable.  Students need to know which adjectives are unacceptable and which are preferred.  This simple teacher behavior fits the bill on both.

It’s not too late!  Getting teachers to focus on these two critical behaviors, as well as the others we will cover in this weekly series, has shown to make immediate improvements in student outcome data.  If you know that the students or teachers on your campus need a little extra Push! before the testing window opens, we offer on-site training and coaching support to schools like yours all over the United States.

If you want new results, teachers need new skills.  The time is now!
